Karl Marx was a philosopher, economist, socialist, and journalist in the 18th century. He is most famous for his books the Communist Manifesto and Das Kapital. Among his theories he discussed ideas involving the economy, politics, and social relations. Some of his most important phrases most central to Marx’s thinking were alienation, freedom, surplus value, and social relations of production. The new ideas he presented regarding politics and economics, his critiques of other theories and political systems, and the long- lasting impact he had on society are what made Karl Marx innovative. Marx argues that capitalism creates alienation and made this is a main critique of capitalism. Although he did take inspiration from Hegel’s philosophy, his idea of alienation was different in the respect that the â€Å"spirit† is not alienated from itself, but it is people who are alienated from their work or from each other (Ball, Terence, Richard Dagger, and Daniel O’Neill 142). There are four factors in which Marx believes the workers are alienation. The first is that they don’t own the means of production or what they produce so in turn they are alienated from the product of their labor (148). Second, there is no satisfaction in their labor because mass production kills creativity (148). Third, the workers power to create and enjoy beauty is destroyed so they are alienated from their human potential (149). Suicide has historically been and continues to be a significant issue in the United States, for civilians as well as active duty military service members and veterans. While statistics surrounding suicide appear to be just numbers on a page, I personally implore the reader of the following paper to never lose sight of the fact that those numbers represent real people. Each one of those people, be they civilian or military, represent a loss of a father or a mother, a brother or a sister, a son or a daughter, a best friend, a comrade, †¦a person whose life, and that life’s potential, is now forever lost. The following statistics on suicide rates in the United States do not differentiate if the individual was a civilian, an active duty†¦show more content†¦As in 1964, nearly 50 percent (49.92 percent) of those who committed suicide in 2014, did so using a firearm (Wintemute, 2015). Buried amongst the preceding numbers are the suicide statistics related directly to active duty service members and the veterans, which now will be exposed, calculated, and compared to those of the civilian population. In a report prepared by the CDC, the suicide rate among the general population in 2013 was 12.6 per 100,000. In comparison, data compiled by the Department of Defense (DoD) on active duty personnel in the U.S. armed services, indicated a suicide rate of 18.7 per 100,000 that same year. This equates to the suicide rate, in 2013, among active duty service members (18.7 per 100,000) being 48 percent higher than the suicide rate of the general population (12.6 per 100,000) (Meyer, 2015). According to the Department of Veterans Affairs Mental Health Services Suicide Prevention Program (2012), 49,000 veterans committed suicide between 2005-2011. Furthermore, when a state by state comparison of veterans and civilian suicide rates are calculated and compared, â€Å"Veterans commit suicide at double and sometimes triple the rates of civilian suicides, with the rates varying from state to state,† the overall statistics equate to an average of 30 per 100,000. Using Laughter as Medicine The saying â€Å"laughter is the best medicine† is one that many people know. But is this actually true? Can laughter be used as a form of curing the body? With three out of four adults claiming to laugh four or more times a day (Polaroid Corp, 2004) it is something that is obviously easy to do, and of which the answer to the time old question of whether or not it is the best medicine, might surprise many skeptics out there. To laugh is defined as: â€Å"to express certain emotions, especially mirth or delight, by a series of spontaneous, usually unarticulated sounds often accompanied by corresponding facial and bodily movements† (Dictionary, 2013). This simple act has been suggested to boost immunity, lower stress hormone, decrease pain, relax muscles, and prevent heart disease (Smith Segal, 2012), and those are just the physical health benefits. Other studies have suggested that laughter is a great way to ease anxiety and fear, relieve stress, improve mood, and even enhance resilience (Bennett et al., 2003). Not to mention that sharing a good laugh with friends and family can bring these relationships closer (Bennett et al., 2003).
